Weekly Wins: Things to do in Phoenix 8/15 – 8/21

 

 

Another week of August in the Valley means another week of high temps – but also, another week of possibility when it comes to things to do. There’s a ton going on this week in August as we get closer to the month being over. Don’t worry, everything we found will keep you out of the heat.

Wednesday, August 15

– Those who enjoy hearing a good story should head over to Valley Bar for Bar Flies, a monthly reading series where members of the community tell stories centered around a specific theme. This month, the theme is “True Colors” – so stop by, have a drink, and listen. Admission is $5 and the show starts at 7 pm.

– Head over to the Phoenix Art Museum for a showing of “Untitled” – a film directed by Jonathan Parker that centers around an art gallerist who falls for a new music composer. Tickets are $5 for the show starting at 6:30 pm.

Thursday, August 16

– De Soto Central Market gets unplugged for an open mic night starting at 7 pm. Go to experience performances from members of the community or step up to the microphone yourself to let your voice be heard.

– Celebrate Madonna’s 60th birthday at Valley Bar with a dance party tribute. DJs will be spinning all of the best tracks from the Queen of Pop as well as other 80’s female artists. The party starts at 9 pm, and tickets are $8.

Friday, August 17

– Enjoy a social night at the Arizona Science Center with “Science with a Twist,” – an adult only party featuring music, drinks, and much more. This time, the theme is a “Once Upon a Time Murder Mystery,” where you can play detective to try and solve a magical crime. General admission is $12, and the event runs from 6-10pm.

– Who doesn’t love free music? La Luz De La Luna is a trio of powerful women bringing a collaborative and intimate approach to traditional Latin music. They’ll be at Crescent Ballroom to entertain starting at 6 pm.

Saturday, August 18

– Being able to try a variety of wines is a fun way to expand your palate and see what you like! Head over to Hidden Track Bottle Shop for a wine tasting from 12-3pm.

Hang out at the Nash for an evening of jazz classics performed by the venue’s very own vocal ensemble. There will also be a special vocal tribute to the Beatles! Tickets are $20 ($10 for students with ID), and the show starts at 7:30 pm.

– Vox Urbana will be at Valley Bar combining Latin-based sounds with stories and experiences occurring in the Arizona/Sonora border region. Come hear the narratives of the border community as well as great music for $5, starting at 8pm.

Sunday, August 19

– Shopping fanatics can enjoy a day at De Soto Central market featuring a live DJ and vendors selling a variety of goods. “Sip and Shop Sunday” also features drink specials like $3 mimosas and select beer. Starts at 12pm.

– Are you a beer fanatic? Always looking to try new brews? Well, you’re in luck – the Van Buren is hosting the “Van Beer’n Indoor Beer Festival” featuring over 20+ breweries. From 1-6pm, enjoy live music, a patio BBQ, and of course, beer. The event is free to attend with tasting tickets available to purchase on site.

Monday, August 20

– What’s a better way to spend a Monday than with Happy Hour? Head over to the Salty Sow in Paradise Valley for a great happy hour selection from 4-6:30pm, including select wines for $5, discounts on signature drinks, and small plates for $7 (the honey rosemary dipped fried chicken sounds delightful).

Tuesday, August 21

– The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com presents a “Arizona Storytellers: Our Families, Our Culture.” The night features stories about families – the ones we are born into and the ones we choose. Tickets for the night are $12, and the event runs from 7-8:30pm at the Phoenix Theatre.

– Valley Bar hosts the Voice winner Sawyer Fredericks and special guest Parsonsfield for a night of feel-good soul music. Fredericks won the eighth season (in 2015) of the singing competition at the age of 16 and is talented beyond his years! Tickets are $20 for the show starting at 7:30pm.
