Weekly Wins: Things to Do in Phoenix 11/14 – 11/20

 

 

The temperatures just keep getting nicer as we head into the middle of November. What’s great about this time of year is that there is no lack of fun events to attend across the Valley. Get out your calendar and start planning out your week – there’s dance parties, food tastings, and everything in between.

Wednesday, November 14

– Hang out at Valley Bar for this month’s “Barflies” reading series, starting at 7 p.m. Members of the community tell true stories surrounding a theme, which is “Not as Advertised” for this month. Tickets are $6.

Coldplay fans can catch a showing of “A Head Full of Dreams,” a documentary showcasing backstage footage, live performances, and more. The one-night only event is being shown at FilmBar at both 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Thursday, November 15

– The Phoenix Art Museum is hosting an after-hours night, where you can enjoy a cash bar, social hour at the attached restaurant, a DJ, and free admission to the special Teotihuacan exhibit (among other exhibits). Tickets are $8 each or two for $12 – or FREE for ASU students and faculty with ID.

– Hayden Library at ASU presents “The Making of Arizona: Mexican & Mexican American History” to celebrate the publication of the book “Mexican Workers and the Making of Arizona” as well as Ben Miranda Papers and Mary Rose Wilcox papers. Appetizers will be served. Entry is free and open to the public, and the event starts at 6 p.m.

Friday, November 16

– Help Four Peaks Brewing Company celebrate its 21st birthday with a party running from 3-11 p.m. Featuring various music performances (including the All-American Rejects), food, and of course, beer – it’s sure to be a great time. Tickets start at $10 for general admission.

– It’s time to Party with a Purpose over at Valley Bar, starting at 10 p.m. A $3 donation gets you into the party and 100% of the proceeds benefit the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Enjoy beats spun by DJentrification.

Saturday, November 17

– The Japanese Friendship Garden gives you the opportunity to enjoy an authentic tea ceremony presented by Tanko Kai tea group, wearing beautiful kimonos. There are various times for the ceremonies, starting at 10:15 a.m. Entry is $30.

– Don’t miss the kickoff of the Scottsdale ArtFest, which features over 150 artists lining the streets of Downtown Scottsdale. Apart from the art, there will be food trucks, live music, and great weather. Admission and parking are free, and the event runs 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Sunday, November 18

– From 6 – 9 p.m., enjoy a Sunday night jam session over at the Nash, featuring student and professional musicians playing together in a variety of combos. This week features Pam Morita as the pianist and bandleader. Tickets are $10 at the door, or $5 for students with ID.

History enthusiasts will enjoy listening to obscure anecdotes of Phoenix events over at Valley Bar starting at 7 p.m. “History Underground” features stories of semi-forgotten people, places, and events for only $5.

Monday, November 19

– Who doesn’t love wine and chocolate? Try five different wines paired with handmade Zak’s chocolates from 6-7 p.m over at GenuWine in Phoenix.

– The Van Buren is hosting “Last Fan Standing,” an interactive trivia quest that includes fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and superheroes as the categories. The live event is hosted by Bruce Campbell and you participate using clickers to get the chance to be one of the four participants on stage at the end. After each round, the final four are eliminated until there’s only one fan left. Tickets start at $39.

Tuesday, November 20

– Westgate is being transformed into a winter wonderland with a holiday tree lighting, an ice skating rink, and the first arrival of Santa Claus! The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes until 10:45 p.m. More details here.

– Meet the PHX Fray staff and try your hand at some Kickball with a free pick-up game starting at 8 p.m. over at Coronado Park! After a few hours of playing, join the other players at a nearby bar to get to know each other. This is a great way to try a new sport and see what we have to offer over at PHX Fray. All skill levels welcome, 21+.
