Traditional Cornhole Rules

Golden Rule

First and foremost all PHX Fray leagues are 50% Social and 50% Sport. We do have officials; however, we expect individuals to respect the league’s culture of fair and fun play. Foul language and rough play will not be tolerated and individuals who cannot adhere to our standards of fair play and sportsmanship may be asked to leave the league. PHX Fray wants everyone to have a great time and be social while enjoying a great sport. PHX Fray will do whatever they can to make sure all players are having fun.

General

Our Traditional cornhole rules are different from our social rules with subtraction scoring vs. cumulative and gender rules.

Team Sizes and Roster

PHX Fray is proud to relieve captains of the burden of paying for full teams. While captains and players are able to prepay for additional players and or full teams, it is not a requirement for participation in our leagues. We welcome individual player payments.

We are also proud to welcome those who do not have a full team (small groups and free agents) to participate in our league.

Our primary mission is to make it easier for people to have fun and get involved with social sports and these policies help accomplish that goal.

Because of these policies, all registrations are on a first come first serve basis and any roster that does not reach our standard size (based on each sport) is eligible to receive free agents and or small group by the league. Rosters made up of primarily free agents and or a collection of small groups may field more players than the standard roster size. This policy is in place to help ensure free agent teams are able to consistently field teams each week.

Gameplay

  1. Games are played to 21 points.
  2. Teams will play 3 games per match, if needed and if time allows (in case of sweep).
  3. Each team must use 2 female players in some combination during the first 2 games.
  4. Each player gets 4 bags per turn.
  5. Rock-Paper-Scissors determines which team starts the first round.
  6. Players standing at the same board take turns throwing. Ie, Player A throws, then Player B throws, back-and-forth until both have thrown all 4 of their bags
  7. Bounce shots are not permitted. If a bag hits the ground before making it’s way to the board, it should be removed from the court and is worth no points.

Traditional Scoring

  1. Games are played to 21 points.
  2. Bags that land on the board are worth 1 point.
  3. Bags that pass through the hole on the board are worth 3 points.
  4. Scoring is based on a subtraction format. If player A scores 5 points, and Player B scores 4 points, Team A will gain 1 point for that round.
  5. Games are played until one team reaches 21 points or the time limit is reached, at which point the team with the higher score wins.
  6. If a team reaches 21 points before the end of the round, their opponent still may complete the round; scoring is not done until the round is officially completed.
